Israel Dramatically Denounces Iran Nuclear Deal Before UN
Netanyahu also criticized Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for failing to hold direct peace talks with Israel.
In his speech on Wednesday Abbas cited continual Israeli violations of the 20-year-old accords, including non-stop Israeli settlement of land the Palestinians claim for their hoped-for state, for his decision to no longer feel bound by the political and security agreements.
Hammad was responding to Netanyahu’s remarks in his United Nations address where he called on the Palestinians to unconditionally resume the stalled peace negotiations.
“Unfortunately, President Abbas said yesterday that he is not prepared to do this”.
Abbas had accused Israel of undermining US attempts at brokering peace, though Netanyahu placed the blame on the Palestinians. Through releasing billions of dollars in sanctions relief to Iran, he said, “it makes war more likely”. Netanyahu asked. “Do any of you really believe a theocratic Iran with sharper claws and sharper fangs will be more likely to change its stripes?”
Netanyahu, speaking at the UN General Assembly, listed various threats to Israel’s security made by top Iranian leaders, and called out the United Nations for endorsing the Iran nuclear deal in the face of anti-Israeli sentiments. And the response from this body, from almost every one of the governments here, has been absolutely nothing.
That sentence was followed by a long, tense 40-second silence in which Netanyahu stared down the room full of diplomats. Netanyahu is expected to talk about the Iran nuclear deal, which Israel bitterly opposed and then was signed by the U.S. and five other countries earlier this year.
Politico reported that Reid went to White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough both times as he attempted to get Democratic support for the Iran nuclear deal. “But we owe it to our peoples to try, to continue to try”, he said. “Utter silence. Deafening silence”.
Calling on the worldwide community to condemn the shooting, Netanyahu said: “I want to make this clear: We’re going to fight these terrorists in ways they will understand so that terrorism won’t be worthy”.
The Israeli leader denied that the disagreement over the Iran deal and Israel’s aggressive attempts to derail it have damaged the Washington-Jerusalem ties.
The two also discussed the need to return to peace negotiations without further delay, with the secretary-general noting the broad global expectation on the parties to show leadership and take the decisions needed to implement a two-state solution, the spokesman added.
