FDNY: 1 dead, 3 others injured in apparent blast in Brooklyn
At least one person is dead and three others were hurt when the Borough Park building exploded Saturday afternoon.
More than 100 firefighters responded to calls to help put out the fire.
A source at the scene tells PIX11 two civilians, father and son, were hit by a falling piece of the building and were transported to Maimonides Medical Center by Hatzolah ambulances. One of the victims is in critical condition, but is not believed to have life-threatening injuries. An inspection of the gas boiler by an insurance agent in July 2014 found no defects, according to the most recent records available on the Buildings Department’s website.
The woman’s body was discovered in a stairwell near the second floor, close to the apartment where the explosion started, Nigro said. The three people who were injured were pedestrians, including one child who was 10 years old. “And so then I didn’t know what to do because I was with my little sister so I was like, ‘Let’s go! let’s go!”
NYC Emergency Management is directing people to avoid the area and to expect smoke and delays.
City Department of Buildings staffers also headed out to assess the damage.
In a statement, Governor Andrew Cuomo said the State Department of Public Service will conduct an investigation into the cause of the explosion adding.
