Lemony Snicket Pledges $1M to Planned Parenthood
Handler’s wife, the illustrator Lisa Brown, called Planned Parenthood “a great organization that has provided top-quality health care for countless women and families in our lives”.
The nonprofit group Planned Parenthood has received a $1 million donation from the author of the book series A Series of Unfortunate Events.
The author of “A Series of Unfortunate Events” said in the tweet that the couple has been “very fortunate” and wanted to share it with “noble causes”.
When asked about their connection to Planned Parenthood, the pair said they’re simply “Americans and human beings” who “believe in people making their own reproductive choices”. The embattled women’s health organization is now involved in a fight to avoid congressional defunding for allegedly using fetuses for profit.
Planned Parenthood has been a topic of hot debate in recent weeks with a Republican-run congress adamant on slashing funding for the women’s healthcare organization, arguing that the group does not need taxpayer financing.
Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket, made the announcement Monday night via his Twitter account, which, for such a famous figure, boasts a relatively small following of a little over 8,000.
But the Planned Parenthood defends its practice as the legal donation of tissue to research firms.
Later that day, Planned Parenthood expressed its appreciation for the gift.
It is known that the house Republicans in Washington have been trying hard to cut off federal funding for Planned Parenthood and have threatened a government shutdown over the issue.
