FAA to dump navigation points named for Donald Trump
Laura Brown, an FAA spokeswoman, said in an e-mail that generally “the FAA chooses names that are non-controversial”.
The Federal Aviation Administration announced this week that navigational coordinate points with references to Donald Trump will be renamed.
Taking that route, the flight will pass over the navigational points that form the sentence: “You’re fired Donald Trump“.
But wait! When the Palm Beach Post told Trump about the coordinates in May 2010, he said,”It is my honor”.
The FAA’s decision to rename the points comes as Trump – who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination – has drawn fire for controversial comments he made about Mexican immigrants. The points were named DONLD, TRMMP and UFIRED, but the change will take effect in several months.
“We actually have had reports of people refusing to fly these departures because they are so offended by the fact that Trump has been memorialized”, Paul Agnew, then-head of the airport’s advisory committee on noise, said during a meeting in 2010.
No big deal: Trump stated that running for president is more important to him than being a “blip on the radar”.
The Florida airport also has a point named IVNKA ONE, honoring Trump’s daughter. It is unclear at this time if that code will be changed.
The New York Times first reported the FAA’s plans.
