‘Flight of the Conchords’ Taika Waititi in negotiations to direct ‘Thor: Ragnarok’
However, it looks as though the studio plans on shaking things up for the Norse god’s third outing, Thor: Ragnarok. The New Zealand-based Waititi directed two episodes of the HBO series Flight of the Conchords, and has also directed several feature films in his native country.
Marvel has had great success thinking outside the box when it comes to selecting the talent to steer their tentpole superhero films. He has a way with freaky outsiders interacting uncomfortably with those around them, and what is Thor but a weird outsider when he’s on this planet?
The Wrap claims that Waititi beat out Zombieland (2009) and Gangster Squad (2013) director Ruben Fleischer to become Marvel’s top pick for the gig. His latest film, What We Do in the Shadows, is an excellent and hilarious fake documentary about four vampires sharing a house (you can check it out here – I recommend it highly).
“Thor” movies were helmed by different directors. Also: Waititi is half-Maori, which means he’ll be the first non-white director getting a chance to play in the MCU.
Kiwi director Taika Waititi is tipped to direct Hollywood blockbuster movie Thor 3. In it, Thor will reportedly try to save the people in his home and work on stopping such deadly cycle for good.
Chris Hemsworth as the title character in the Thor franchise. He’ll be joined by Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif.
The third film, Thor: Ragnarok, is due to be released in July 2017.
