The shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg left nine people dead and nine more injured Thursday.
Stacy Boylan, whose daughter survived the shooting, told USA television network CNN that his daughter described to him how the gunman asked his victims to state their religion before shooting them.
Harper-Mercer, whose father is English, was killed in a subsequent shoot-out with police.
Oregon State Police received reports of an active shooter at 10:42.
Eileen Sandlin, 40, a resident of the Los Angeles neighbourhood of Tarzana where Mercer’s father Ian Mercer lives, said her husband, Bob, used to tutor Mercer in science and maths when he was of middle and high-school age.
Boylan said he doesn’t know what was in it.

Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama launched a stringent attack on America’s gun laws after the mass shooting in Oregon.

The president says he plans to keep talking about the issue and “will politicize it” because inaction is itself a political decision the U.S.is making.
He said it’s impossible to identify mentally ill people likely to perpetrate mass shootings ahead of time. He says the only thing the USA can do is ensure they don’t have an arsenal available “when something in them snaps”.
“In Oregon, this is a hunting state, and firearms are popular”, Hanlin said. Seven more weapons were found at his home. “Almost like a tantrum, like a kid…. There’s 10, 9 kids who won’t get those doors opened”, he said.
Laurel Harper was awarded custody of her son and they lived together in an apartment at Winchester, Oregon, about a four-minute drive from the college. Campus spokeswoman Ann Garten says she has no details on whether he graduated or what he studied.

Moore said she saw her teacher get shot in the head, apparently after the gunman came into the classroom.
Wanda Mintz said her 30-year-old nephew, Chris Mintz, a student at the college, fell to the floor and asked the shooter to stop.

She says investigators also found a flak jacket next to a rifle at the school, which contained steel plates. He died after a shootout with police.
Police said that he had body armour, three pistols, a rifle and five extra magazines of ammunition. A neighbor, Bronte Harte, told The Associated Press that Mercer “seemed really unfriendly” and would “sit by himself in the dark in the balcony with this little light”.
In addition to the MySpace page, Mercer appeared to have at least one online dating profile, a torrents streaming account and a blog.
One avenue investigators were pursuing are five blog posts on a website left by someone with an email address associated with Mercer. A MySpace page believed to belong to the gunman included photos of him and also photos of IRA posters. One was an assistant professor of English at the college.
