Fielder, Beltre homer in Rangers win over Padres
San Diego third baseman Yangervis Solarte’s two-run homer capped a three-run ninth inning as the Padres rallied for a 6-5 victory over Texas on Saturday night.
The Padres extended their longest losing streak this season to six games. 500 and are exactly where they were a year ago at this time.
“It seems like there’s always one play offensively or defensively that is turning the game for us one way or the other”, said Middlebrooks, who didn’t think DeShields had tagged up because the runner was off the bag the last time he looked.
They now travel south to finish off the first half of the disappointing 2015 season.
RANGERS FOURTH: For the third time this season, Prince Fielder and Adrian Beltre hit consecutive homers.
Rangers starter Wandy Rodriguez (6-4) ended his seven-game losing streak in Arlington, where he hadn’t won in 9 years. Maybe all the Rangers needed was the lead to ignite some success in their own ballpark. The 29-year-old Mexican went 2-0 during his scoreless streak, allowing 14 hits over 26 1/3 frames, and hadn’t given up more than two runs in any of his eight starts prior to facing the Diamondbacks.
Elvis Andrus gave Texas a run to spare with a run-scoring double in the eighth, but Tolleson couldn’t hold it. He gave up five hits and three runs in two-thirds of an inning, getting replaced by Spencer Patton after Solarte’s homer was followed by a single from Matt Kemp, who had a two-run homer in the third.
“Obviously when you get a lead it takes a little pressure off our guys”, Texas manager Jeff Banister said. Ex- Rangers closer Neftali Feliz became a free agent Friday after refusing an outright assignment to Triple-A Round Rock.2. He was at his best against Arizona on June 20 in which he went nine innings, allowed one run and struck out nine in an 8-1 win. He said he felt good even then. Texas had runners on second and third with one out in the fifth but Fielder and Beltre both flew out to left.
Kennedy has lost three consecutive starts and has two wins in his last 10 starts. Venable scored when Melvin Upton singled, but Andrew Cashner (who was pinch-running for Wallace) got thrown out trying to reach third base.
An infield hit and a walk put two Padres on base with two outs in the ninth, but Tolleson remained flawless in save situations by striking out Kemp. San Diego LF Justin Upton returned to the lineup from a strained left oblique on Friday and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.3.
Rangers: LHP Derek Holland is closing in on his first session of live batting practice since going on the DL on April 11 with a left shoulder strain.
Padres: Murphy said RHP Brandon Morrow came out of three innings of simulated work OK and should be ready for a rehab assignment that is to be determined.
Rodriguez is 0-4 in six starts (the Rangers are 2-4 in those games) and has a 7.42 ERA in front of the home fans.
