Criterion founders tease Burnout spiritual successor
A spiritual successor to Burnout, one of the finest (if not the finest) arcade racers ever made is in the pipeline, thanks to Three Fields Entertainment, a studio formed past year by ex-Criterion bosses Alex Ward and Fiona Sperry.
It’s been seven years now since Burnout Paradise, but while the name might still belong to EA it seems as if new studio Three Fields Entertainment are planning to make a new entry anyway. The studio’s comments suggest a return to the earlier entries in the series. “Our second project will be a racing game”, he told the site. “We aim to support PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift”.
Now, in a series of tweets, the developer has teased what it’s up to.
The “shiny red car” hashtag is a reference to the codename Criterion used while making the first Burnout game.
A Twitter tease for Three Fields Entertainment’s racing title promises “Speed”. Traffic. And Crashing. Lots and lots of crashing.
“Spiritual successor to which one though???” it continued.
There have in fact been five main releases in the Burnout series, but the fifth – Burnout Paradise – deviated from the originals by offering an open-world world. Fans will surely be ready to welcome a spiritual successor to the franchise with such a long gap since the last release, then.
