Venus Williams Gets 700th Career Win
Venus Willimas progressed through to the next round of the Chian Open after beating Julia Goerges of Germany in the second round 6-4 6-3 on Tuesday.
“This was my first match after the US Open and it’s always tough to find the rhythm, but mentally I was strong and I’m happy with the win”, he told reporters later.
Williams, who is the oldest player at Wuhan and turned professional in 1994, when Goerges was not yet six, joins an illustrious list that also contains her sister Serena (737) and is topped by Martina Navratilova with 1,4420.
“Wow, 700, I love it!”
Sharapova announced her withdrawal from next week s China Open in Beijing, raising questions over whether the five-time grand slam victor will manage a comeback this season – injuries have kept her off the court since Wimbledon.
But just as it had against Daria Gavrilova in her first match, where Kvitova dropped the second set and went 5-3 down in the third, her form fluctuated, and Vinci took advantage of a couple of wayward errors to get on the score-board, and then draw level at 4-4.
Meanwhile, Venus is scheduled to cross the swords with Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro on Wednesday for a place in the last-eight stage of the tournament here.
It’s been at least seven years, when she last won Wimbledon, since the best version of Williams has been seen.
“I’m glad nobody told me before, I would have been a little bit nervous”, Venus said.
“I was expecting a hard match”, Muguruza said. Schmiedlova will next meet Kristina Mladenovic, who beat 14th-seeded Madison Keys of the United States 7-5, 1-6, 6-2.
Roberta Vinci of Italy returns a ball during the third round match against Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic at 2015 WTA Wuhan Open Tennis Tournament in Wuhan, capital of central China’s Hubei Province, on September 30, 2015.
