Delaware universities on high alert
“Just days after a massive school shooting (referencing the shooting this past week at Umpqua Community College in Oregon, in which nine people were killed by a gunman during a class session), I don’t think anyone feels safe going to class knowing there is even the slightest chance of the same incident happening on Villanova’s campus”.
The schools planned to operate normally Monday, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. “This posting states an action could take place at 1 p.m. central (2 p.m. eastern) Monday, October 5, 2015”, a statement on Temple’s website reads.
Temple University spokesperson Brandon Lausch confirmed that the university had received notification through a letter from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and ATF warning campuses to remain alert.
According to 6 ABC, Temple police said law enforcement officials were not aware of a specific threat but would have increased visibility on Monday. Police are unsure which university may be the target of the threat.
The University of Pennsylvania also issued a statement and will coordinate closely with Drexel. This threat is not specific to any college or university.
It said there would be an increased police and security presence on Monday. “In an abundance of caution for the safety of our campus, the University is adding additional security patrols”.
They ask the community to report any suspicious behavior to the Department of Public Safety at 610-519-4444.
Law enforcement officials are asking the community to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity immediately.
She only found out about the threat by logging on to La Salle’s website; she did not receive an email from the school about it. Under the announcement section on the site, the phrase “SAFETY ADVISORY” appears, and she says that these are frequently put on the site to alert students to campus muggings and other crime nearby.
