Terminator Sequels on Hold
For now we should bask in knowing that we need not endure another Genisys TV spot or trailer for quite a few time and respect Paramounts decision to put it on indefinite hold.
The latest Terminator movie, Terminator Genysis, proved a disappointment at the box office this summer, with a domestic gross of under $90 million. Terminator: Genisys already had a reported budget of somewhere in the vicinity of $155 million, which isnt chump change, and when you factor in a massive global marketing campaign, at least according to this report, Skydance and Paramount Pictures didnt wind up making any money. The movie teased a sequel would be happening, but now it looks like the series has been terminated for now.
Another example given is Thomas Thull of Legendary Entertainment who scored success by parterning on the Nolan Batman movies, but ended up losing money on Pacific Rim, with the sequel in question as the release date was recently shelved. But if fans still have the bad taste in their mouth from Terminator: Genisys, then they may not be all that interested. It was so enthusiastic that a television series plus the aforementioned sequels seemed likely. As well as the two sequels lined up on Paramount’s slate for 2017 and 2018, a dedicated small screen outing had attracted the likes of Sarah Connor Chronicles scribes Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz. A big part of this timeline was because the rights to the Terminator franchise revert back to originator James Cameron in 2019, and Paramount was going to try to sneak these in under the wire.
