Ian Wright says Liverpool should appoint Carlo Ancelotti, not Jurgen Klopp

The Reds, now sat 10th in the Premier League after a substandard start to the campaign, have identified the German as their ideal successor – though Carlo Ancelotti and Frank de Boer are other candidates under consideration.

Instead Liverpool find themselves looking for a new boss mid-season, one who will have to make do with players that Rodgers thought could pull him out of the hole he’d dug for himself.

You don’t know what goes on behind closed doors but I was surprised.

Liverpool FC are in the process of approaching the representatives of Jurgen Klopp over the vacant managerial position at Anfield after Brendan Rodgers’ sacking.

“I don’t think he deserved that at all“, said Monk, who played under Rodgers at the south Wales club.

Which, read another way, is they did not think Rodgers was maximising the resources he had at his disposal.

“Liverpool are becoming Tottenham: they think they’re a big club but the real big clubs are not too anxious about them, who they buy and what they’re going to do”. I presume the owners must have done that and have been talking to a person if things went wrong.

“I am sure Klopp’s name will be thrown in, a manager like that out of work is maybe why pressed the button, it is time to tempt a manager like that”.

‘I can’t believe that. That’s the situation it’s become for Liverpool, even when I was there towards the end.

Graeme Souness, who captained and managed Liverpool, said the club had fallen behind their supposed rivals, notably in the transfer market.

There are many questions to be asked about their stewardship and perhaps it’s time they were.

Nobody expected Liverpool to win it, but nobody expected them to concede it so limply before the group stages were over.
