Typhoon Mujigae approaches E part of S. China sea

A cold front entering northern Vietnam has also brought rain to the region, especially in mountainous areas, the center said.

Till Sunday evening, the typhoon caused widespread blackouts in Zhanjiang city, where water supply was also cut off in many areas.

State news agency Xinhua reported the storms would last in the densely populated Pearl River Delta until Monday.

The government of Fanyu District of Guangzhou said three persons were killed and 134 others injured after tornados hit Nancun and Shiqi damaging house.

The department received a total of 59 reports in relation to damage from the typhoon from Saturday at 6 pm to Sunday at 9 pm, 27 of which involved collapsed trees while another 26 were calls asking the department to handle dangerously unstable objects.

The authorities had begun to evacuate tourists from the island on Saturday, but it was interrupted by strong winds. It left two dead and about 30 fishermen missing, said regional Office of Civil Defence spokesman Mike Sabado.

The remaining tourists were taken to hotels for free accommodation.

It grounded flights and prompted suspensions of rail service in a few cities along China’s southern coast, including places popular with tourists such as Hainan and Sanya.

The typhoon will likely disrupt travel plans for millions of Chinese during the current week-long public holiday.
