Nurse learns patient dying from hit-and-run is her brother
In a unusual twist of fate, Medina was brought to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center, the same hospital where his sister, Jenifer Medina, works in registration.
Cesar Andres Medina, 23, was on his skateboard crossing northbound on Del Obispo when he was struck.
A nurse trying to identify a badly wounded hit-and-run victim suffered heartbreak when she discovered it was her own brother.
Jennifer Medina had no idea her brother Cesar, known as Andy, was the doomed John Doe patient on the doctor’s table until she and a coworker checked for identification. Medina said when her colleague found the man’s wallet, she immediate recognized it.
“Everything just collapsed. I just couldn’t hold it together”, Jennifer told NBC.
The suspected driver, 19-year-old Andrew Christopher Michaels, was arrested Saturday night, police said. Many of Medina’s friends stayed at the memorial, located at Del Obispo Street and Paseo Carolina, through the midnight hour.
Witness accounts and evidence shows Medina was struck in the crosswalk as he crossed from the south to the north side of Del Obispo, OCSD said.
“Please I’m begging the guy that killed my nephew to go to the police”, said Mary Floyd, the victim’s aunt.
“I just knew I wanted to say my last goodbyes to Andy after they cleaned him up. I was supposed to be the one in the trauma room registering him but thank goodness I wasn’t”, quotes CBS.
On Saturday evening, OCSD traffic investigators obtained information that led them to Michaels’ home in Laguna Niguel.
Michaels was arrested after being questioned by investigators. Jennifer has created a GoFundMe page where she hopes to raise $10,000 for her bereaved family. Deputies arrived at the residence and found a Dodge Ram truck, believed to be involved in the fatal crash, parked in the driveway.
He was set to be booked in Orange County Jail.
