Zac Goldsmith elected as Conservative mayoral candidate
The newly-selected candidate said he was “honoured” after winning 70 per cent of the 9,227 votes cast using an online primary system.
He faces Sadiq Khan, a 44-year-old former human rights lawyer who had served in Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Labour government in 2010.
The MP for Richmond Park has been a vociferous opponent of a third runway at Heathrow, which is one of few positions he shares with his Labour rival.
Johnson, mayor since 2008, recently won a seat in Britain’s parliament and is considered to be a contender for leader of the Conservative Party after Cameron, who has said he will step down before the next election in 2020.
The Labour candidate told his party’s annual conference on Wednesday that he intends to make the mayoral contest “a referendum on the housing crisis” that’s seen soaring house prices and rents in London and “stand up to big property developers”. ” He said Johnson is the reason “so many people want to live, work and do business here“.
Mr Goldsmith sought permission of his 77,000 constituents before confirming his place in the contest to be the Conservative candidate, sending out a postal ballot to each household asking for their consent.
Like his father Mr Goldsmith was expelled from Eton after cannabis was found in his room, although he later said it was someone else’s weed.

Mr Johnson praised his potential successor, describing him as a “fearless” fighter who is “fizzing with ideas”.
“That seems to me is something a lot of Londoners will be very interested in hearing more about”.
