This insane Screen Squeezes an 8K Display Into a 17-Inch Panel
That’s about to change with the development of a brand new monitor from Japan Display that packs a full 8K resolution into just 17.3 inches.
Japan Display Inc.-a small to medium display maker that is a joint venture of Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi-recently announced what it says is the world’s first 17.3-inch 8K (7680-by-4320) LCD panel. 8K puts more than 33 million pixels in front of your eyeballs, which means this display offers almost 510 pixels per inch (ppi). That’s just a difference of a couple of hundred pixels, but who’s counting when you already know that an 8K display exists somewhere in Japan? 4K display resolutions are technically at 4096 x 2160, while consumer Ultra HD screens are really at a lower 3840 x 2160 resolution because of aspect ratio problems for TVs. Everything is displayed – assuming you have 8K content – at a refresh rate of 120 Hz, double the 60 Hz you are experiencing right now on normal displays. Thanks to its high pixel count and response time, the monitor is being geared toward video image production, medical applications, and gaming. That last use case is a little far fetched, at least for the time being, as you now need a pretty beefy gaming rig to run games at high settings in 4K, let alone 8K.
While it certainly could find good use, no pricing or availability has yet been announced for the display, however, it will be on “display” at the NHK/Jeita booth at Ceatec Japan, which is set to take place later this month.
