Sam Smith Releases James Bond Theme Song, ‘Writing’s on the Wall’
“I got to get away with unbelievable string and brass sections – I got to be a drama queen”.
Smith says the song came together in one whirlwind session.
The soft, orchestral theme is very reminiscent of Skyfall’s eponymous Adele theme from 2012, but a lot less epic. Sam Smith puts his full voice spectrum into the song.
“I love the song so much… it’s the quickest I’ve ever written a song – it took 20 minutes… and [the Bond producers] loved it!”
The ballad’s predictably dramatic with lyrics that include “How do I live?”
Spectre is released in the United Kingdom on October 26. It reminds me of when Paul McCartney and Wings’ awesome 1973 “Live and Let Die” Bond song was followed up by Lulu’s terrible “The Man With the Golden Gun”. Meanwhile former TOWIE star Charlie King – who was romantically linked to Sam earlier this year – also stated that he was loving the tune.
In addition to Adele and Smith, other singers who have crooned theme songs for the iconic series include Jack White, Alicia Keys, Madonna, Tina Turner, Sheena Easton, and Shirley Bassey, to name just a few. Now it is likely Sam Smith’s big opportunity.
What do you think of “Writing’s On the Wall”? “When you’re not here I’m suffocating” – I wanted a touch of vulnerability from Bond, where you see into his heart a little bit”.
To perform a James Bond theme song is a huge honor and opportunity. He’s wonderful. I haven’t spoken to him. Another said: “Initial reaction to #writingsonthewall – sounds like a mixture of ‘Earth Song’ & something you’d hear in a theatre production”.
“I think the whole world fancies Daniel Craig”, he said.
