CC Sabathia Checks Into Rehab, Will Miss Postseason
New York Yankees pitcher C.C. Sabathia has entered alcohol rehab today and will miss the entire playoffs for the Yankees, however long it lasts. The team hosts Houston in the AL wild-card game on Tuesday.
It takes special kind of moron to completely misconstrue something like a man trying to get himself better and healthy and turn it into a sports story.
Sabathia, a six-times All-Star who won a World Series with New York in 2009, was the winning pitcher last Thursday against the rival Boston Red Sox when the Yankees clinched their first postseason berth since 2012.
There was an incident in August with Sabathia in Toronto when he was involved in a street fight during a series with the Blue Jays.
Still, Sabathia’s announcement comes as a shock to those expecting the 35-year-old veteran to at least play a few role in New York’s postseason push. “Time and place have no bearing”, said Cashman. His performance has suffered in recent years as he has lost velocity and struggled through injuries, but with the help of a knee brace, he has bounced back in the past month to bring his overall season ERA down to 4.73.
Sabathia thanked the Yankees for their “encouragement and understanding”, and asked for privacy as he and his family “work through this challenge together”.
“Being an adult means being accountable”, he said.
His surprise move will surely spawn enough hot takes to warm the Boomerang Nebula, but ultimately the only truth is this: If Sabathia felt that whatever problem he has with alcohol is bad enough to demand treatement right now, then no one else is qualified to tell him otherwise. Being a baseball player means that others look up to you. And that’s exactly what I’m going to do.
But we also forget that baseball players are human beings, and the heckling they hear at Yankee Stadium, or anywhere on the road, can take a toll on them. “I know me personally and lot of us in here, we wouldn’t have a ring if it weren’t for CC”. He is still owed $30 million.
