Alabama Ranked 10th In Coaches Poll

Week four of the college football season provided us with a few answers. One gets the feeling it won’t be the last. Alabama 11. Texas A&M 12. Dropping out of the poll were Wisconsin, West Virginia and Mississippi State. For their upset wins, Clemson and Alabama surged roughly five spots. They dominated on Saturday, and are squarely in the conversation to be one of the top 10 teams in the entire country. Seth Russell threw four touchdowns, and Shock Linwood ran for 221 yards. Texas Tech will be a good gauge to see how powerful Baylor is. At least one more time. Both Indiana and Purdue had the ball at the end of the game with a chance to tie or win, and each lost the ball on downs.

“The dust settles and the guys that have won the bigger games and that have played on the road, the kind of team they can count on coming from behind – there’s so many things that you see over the course of weeks as opposed to trying to come up with the early leader”, LSU coach Les Miles said.

And by the way, Ohio State still hasn’t lost.

Where the Big Ten goes off the rails is in the West, where there are three 1-0 teams with a combined record of 14-1 overall: Northwestern, Iowa and Illinois.

Baylor has the best offense in college football. The Tigers are the only American Athletic Conference team to crack the coaches poll and one of only two teams from non-Power Five conferences to do so. UCLA at #7 got beat at home by Arizona State 38-23.

The Buckeyes just keep winning. Despite the struggles of Oregon and Arizona, last year’s division champions, this is still a tough, deep league in which there are few easy outs, and it’s possible that the presumptive favorite in the Pac-12 will change every week going forward. Utah is followed by Stanford (No. 16/18), USC (No. 17/17), UCLA (No. 20/20), and Cal (No. 23/22).
