Destiny to Get New In-Game Currency, Optional Microtransactions
As you no doubt noticed, Bungie added a kiosk for emotes in Destiny, but only implemented three new ones.
Along with Tess’ new look and storefront, microtransactions will be introduced to the game for the first time. She’s the one with the lovely purple scarf – and no, it’s not for sale. Those Boring Coins you earn by completing your “job” back on Earth? Bungie has assured that the emotes are optional and “won’t impact the action game in any way”. “You’ll still receive updates to the game, and you won’t lose a Crucible encounter or fail to clear a Raid because you didn’t have the right Eververse Trading Company emote equipped”. Many a Guardian has been lifted by a defiant hip-thrust in the face of death. “We’ll be dropping a few free Silver into your account so you can purchase an emote or two and become legend through the power of dance”. “It has been, and continues to be, our goal to deliver updates to the game”.
The phrases used by Bungie could be interpreted as a sign that the company does not plan to offer any other major expansions for the social shooter and will shift to a more support-focused business model while it works on an entirely new title, which might be a full sequel. It’s surprising to see it has taken Bungie this long to develop such a system.
However, if the addition of these microtransactions results in a better overall Destiny experience, then it could be a very good thing, and would even benefit players that never spend another real world dime on the game. Will the free DLC packs be canceled?
Destiny: The Taken King is now available for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
