Yoko Ono Tries for Record Human Peace Sign for Lennon’s Birthday
It is in honor of what would have been Lennon’s 75th birthday later this week.
Yoko Ono, the widow of the Beatles’ John Lennon, helped put together this attempt at the “World’s Largest Human Peace Sign”. In addition to Montblanc, the event is being presented by Canon, Juniper Networks, Eventbrite, FlyNYON, iHeart Radio, New York City Department of Education, New York City Parks and Baked By Melissa.
With hopes to gather 6,000 people in the park’s East Meadow, she’ll be seeking to hit a Guinness World Record.
A video to the tune of John Lennon’s “Give Peace a Chance” introduces the concept, showing groups of people forming peace signs as a collective unit. The event, which Ono organized in partnership with the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, also will include surprise musical performances, as well as various family-friendly activities and Lennon-themed commemorative experiences.
This past Sunday Ono headlined the Modern Sky Festival in Central Park with the rotating-lineup Plastic Ono Band, this time including her son Sean Lennon, Thurston Moore, and Georgia Hubley of Yo La Tengo, among others.
Even if no records were broken, the gathering was a fitting tribute to the slain Beatle, with participants ranging from old hippies to kids not yet born when the legendary songwriter and musician died, CBS reports. That event starts at 6pm on October 9.
