Man Collapses During Bengals Game; Later Dies
If you’re ever looking for a reasonably successful team to pillory on account of its consistent postseason shortcomings, the NFL’s Exhibit A is without a doubt the Cincinnati Bengals of the Marvin Lewis-Andy Dalton era. The defense allows nothing other than field goals.
Late in the third quarter and backed up deep in Chiefs’ territory, Alex Smith connected with tight end Travis Kelce over the middle.
A Springfield, Mo., man died Sunday in a restroom at Paul Brown Stadium during the Cincinnati Bengals game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Jeremy Maclin secured 11-of-14 targets for 148 yards in the Chiefs’ Week 4 loss to the Bengals.
But, even though he is 36 and supposed to be on the backside of a spectacular career, one thing hasn’t changed about Smith: He still plays with the same ferocity and tenacity that made him a five-time Pro Bowl receiver with the Panthers. Kansas City actually accrued more yards – 461, edging the Bengals‘ 445 – and had a significantly greater time of possession (36:53 to 23:07), but had trouble finishing drives.
The Cincinnati touchdowns came in the running game, with Hill scoring on an 8-yard run and running back Giovani Bernard busted a 13-yard play for the second score.
It ended up a fumble scooped up by Reggie Nelson and eventually a 5-yard touchdown run from Jeremy Hill. Luckily for the Bengals the sure tackling returned in the red zone forcing the Chiefs to settle for seven field goals. It was a bad combination for the Chiefs, who can’t quite do enough to get a win.
Dalton completed 17 of 24 for 321 yards with the long touchdown pass to Brandon Tate during a scramble.
Coming into the game, the Chiefs knew the talent the Bengals had in the front seven of their defense, and despite a change at right guard by the Chiefs, Fulton for Duvernay-Tardif, they still couldn’t help keep Alex Smith off the ground.
“It’s going to be a good game”, Johnson said, “because it’s the next game”. “Whether it should or shouldn’t, it probably does a little bit, just because it doesn’t feel good to be in a hole, 0-2″.
That kept the score close – the Chiefs trailed only 14-12 at the half – for much of the game.
“We’ve got to tighten that up”, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of the sacks. Given a second chance due to a penalty, Lambo kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the San Diego Chargers to a 30-27 victory against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, snapping a two-game losing streak.
FG#3 – Later in the second quarter, the Chiefs were at the Bengals 33-yard line.
FG#7 – The record breaking field goal came after the Chiefs had first-and-10 at the Cincinnati 36-yard line. They also tried to rectify the subpar play at nickel corner by putting Ron Parker there and upgrade the nickel run defense by using more sets with three interior linemen. The difference is, last year, Dalton threw six interceptions before he reached nine touchdown throws. “We’ve got another big game next week”.
The Bengals (4-0) matched the third-best start in their history, only two wins shy of the club record.
Dalton leads the AFC in fourth-quarter passer rating at 147.5. “As soon as we get over the 50, we start moving backward”.
He’s the Chiefs best offensive player and Charles once again showed that in the first half against the Bengals as he finished with 113 total yards.
It was Tate’s first catch of the season and was a fingertip catch that he hauled in after going vertical.
