The next All Points: In Syria, Russia raises world tensions

Turkey has reported a third incident in which an unidentified Mig-29 – which analysts say may have been Syrian – locked its radar onto Turkish jets for more than five minutes on Sunday over the Turkish-Syrian border.

Turkey’s foreign ministry summoned the Russian ambassador for the second time, following accusations that a Russian fighter jet again violated its air space while flying along the Syrian border.

Asked whether their mission would be extended, Stoltenberg said the initial deployment was meant to help defend Turkey against missile attack from Syria.

“I will not speculate on the motives… but this does not look like an accident and we have seen two of them”, Stoltenberg said of the air incursions in the Hatay region.

Russia’s violations of Turkish airspace appear to be deliberate, NATO’s chief said Tuesday after the second such reported incident in as many days.

Russian Federation has maintained that a two of its fighter jets were allegedly forced by bad weather conditions to change route, entering Turkey without authorization by mistake. Stoltenberg also has said he doubts Russia’s explanation that it was an accident.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has criticised the violations as “irresponsible” and urged Moscow to end raids against civilians and Syria’s opposition forces. Russia’s air campaign in Syria began on September 30.

Russian Federation isn’t conducting operations in Syria involving its own ground troops and won’t do so, Admiral Vladimir Komoyedov, the head of the lower house of parliament’s defence committee, says, amid confusion over whether “volunteers” may be getting involved.

Netanyahu has said he is determined to stop arms deliveries to Lebanon’s Shiite Hezbollah movement and accused Syria’s army and Iran of trying to create a “second front” against Israel.

But the report was strenuously denied by Russian defence ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov.

“If Russian Federation also loses a friend like Turkey, with whom it has made much collaboration, it will lose a lot”, Erdogan was quoted as saying by the state-run Anadolu news agency.

The strikes destroyed 20 vehicles and three weapons depots in Islamic State-held Palmyra, it said.

Moscow has repeatedly said it has no intentions of sending troops to Syria, it is working with the Syrian government, which does have ground troops, as Russian Federation acknowledges you can not use one method alone. It also put the city’s Roman-era ruins under the militants’ control.
