Captain Price hopes to see Presidents Cup in India
And so long as the outcome isn’t obvious by Sunday, expect this president to earn another term.
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem finally acquiesced, reducing the total points from 34 to 30 with the stipulation that each member of the respective 12-man teams play twice prior to the 12 singles matches.
United States team captain Jay Haas, left, talks with his team player Phil Mickelson during a practice round ahead of the Presidents Cup golf tournament at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Incheon, South Korea, Tuesday, October 6, 2015. “But again, we wanted to get Jordan what he wanted here early on, and maybe that can happen down the road”. You get a hot hand in these things, and you ride it out.
And then past year involved extenuating, if not mysterious, circumstances.
The global team has had wonderful players – world-class players – on its roster pretty much from the beginning of the event back in 1994.
Lahiri helped his cause with superlative showing in 2015, which included two wins in joint-sanctioned events Malaysian Open and Hero Indian Open. Sangmoon Bae, who is returning home and will begin his 21-month mandatory military service after the matches, was held out because his partner, Charl Schwartzel, is still weak from a virus. Most of these guys are friends on TOUR and thrive for this kind of event.
“He brings a great sense of humour to the team”, Price told a news conference at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon, venue for the 11th Presidents Cup which is being hosted for the first time in Asia and begins Thursday.
“It all depends on where the points are, how everyone is playing… and from there make that decision who I’ll play against”.
“One of the things that, having been on a number of teams, is to try to figure out how to get the best out of each individual player”, said Mickelson.
“It’s surprising to a degree”, he said. “This is the most excited I’ve been this late in the year because I’m looking forward to being on the team”. He ended past year at No. 22 in the world, and now is struggling to stay in the top 50. And with eight USA wins and one tie in the 10 previous editions, it would be hard to argue the Presidents Cup has been nothing short of one-sided.
He showed that much at the first team dinner Monday night.
Tiger Woods has been dealing with his own set of circumstances, mostly injuries that have kept him out of the game or kept him from playing the game like he once did. A year ago, the US sailed to an 18 1/2-15 1/2 victory at Muirfield Village. But don’t sleep on the Internationals who could arguably have the tournament’s best player on its side.
The other pairings are: Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace for the worldwide Team versus Matt Kuchar and Patrick Reed; Anirban Lahiri and Thongchai Jaidee for the Internationals against Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker; Jason Day and Steven Bowditch for the global side versus Phil Mickelson and Zach Johnson; Danny Lee and Marc Leishman for the Internationals against Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson. You want guys out here who are going to play.
Perhaps more changes are coming.
Mickelson said the best way he could repay Haas’s faith in him was by scoring points for the team. However, this may be the most impressive roster the Internationals have ever fielded.
Jason Day says the Internationals are determined to reverse the trend of losing the Presidents Cup and aim to start with the clash against the USA at Incheon City, Korea, this week.
“This is about the Presidents Cup“.
Furyk is not far behind.
