Daryl Janmaat ruled out of Netherlands’ final European qualifiers
The ESPN FC crew share their thoughts on the Netherlands’ chances of qualifying for Euro 2016 as they trail Turkey by two points in Group A.
Winless Newcastle – who say Janmaat’s withdrawal was “precautionary” – are confident Janmaat will be available for the October 18 game against Norwich at St James’s Park.
Daryl Janmaat says Newcastle United simply MUST beat Norwich City – and he’s determined to be fit enough to play.
With full-backs Massadio Haidara, Paul Dummett and Kevin Mbabu also injured – the first two are still doubts for next weekend while the latter is out for a number of weeks – Steve McClaren could be left scratching around for makeshift defenders for the crucial clash with the Canaries.
I “hope” NUFC are proved right but in my head I’m already ruling Janmaat out of Norwich and struggling for Sunderland, so any improvement on that will be a pleasant surprise for me!
Iceland will appear at their first major tournament and will be joined at Euro 2016 next summer by the Czech Republic but third place, and a play-off berth, in Group A is very much still up for grabs.
The Netherlands are fourth in Group A, two points behind third-place Turkey.
Coach Danny Blind will not name a replacement as the Dutch depart on Wednesday for Astana where they meet Kazakhstan on Saturday.
Vurnon Anita, Tim Krul and Georginio Wijnaldum remain with the Dutch squad.
As well as his defensive duties, Janmaat has often been Newcastle’s best/only creative threat and is now joint top scorer in all competitions.
“It’s very annoying that we’ve let it come to that”.
