BMW M4 GTS – BMW’s fastest road auto ever
On the inside, the weight saving measures continue. The door handles have also been replaced with fabric loops, and the brace hiding behind the instrument panel is made of carbon fiber. A mix of Alcantara, carbon fibre and glass fibre have been used for weight reduction.
BMW says that the GTS’ sports exhaust system, with a titanium muffler and 80mm diameter tips, has an “emotionally-rich soundtrack”. The benefit of OLED is that this type of lighting uses less energy and offers the possibility to dim variably.
BMW also introduced the first ever OLED (organic light-emitting diodes) rear lights which are created to light up over their full surface with a very homogeneous effect, which LED lights fail to do. Unlike the normal LEDs, they give a homogeneous effect.
The engineers also managed to implement a water injection system bumping output of the turbo-six 3.0-liter to 500 PS & 600 Nm and shaved off 62 kg (137 lbs) compared to the regular M4 Coupe, so it now weighs 1,510 kg (3,329 lbs).
Earlier this year, we exclusively announced that the new BMW M2 will use the N55 engine which has been revised to include a few parts from the S55 powerplant found in the new M3/M4.
The results are 493bhp produced at 6250rpm and 442lb ft available from 4000-5500rpm. A five-litre water tank sits in the boot of the M4 GTS sprays tiny amounts of vapour into the intake manifold chamber to cool temperatures by up to 25 degrees. The sports auto accelerates from a stand still to a 100 kmph in just 3.8 seconds and it goes on to a top speed of 305 kmph. It has been extensively developed and tested at the Nurburgring, where it recorded a lap time of 7mins 28secs – nearly 30 seconds faster than the standard M4, with a top speed of 190mph. Up front the GTS has 19-inch rims paired with 265/35 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres while out the back there are 20-inch units with 285/30 rubber. The M steering wheel comes with gearshift paddles for manual control.
To make the auto even more capable is the three-way M coil over suspension that can be adjusted depending on conditions or the driver’s taste. Stopping power is provided by carbon ceramic disc brakes.
Acid Orange also appears on the optional roll cage, should you decide to spec the Clubsport package.
The M4 GTS is one in a line of many special edition M cars, the first of which was the 1988 M3 Evolution and in more recent times the much revered M3 CSL in 2003. “They sharpen the character of the BMW M brand and embody an emotionally rich and exclusive driving experience”.
As we, along with every petrolhead on the planet, speculated when the M4 GTS Concept broke cover at Pebble Beach, there was a seriously hardcore, track-focused M4 special edition in the wings.
Somehow the M4 GTS has a claimed fuel economy figure of 34mpg and Carbon dioxide emissions of 199g/km so it could be cheap to run for anyone boring enough to drive it slowly.
