South Carolina game moved to Louisiana due to flooding
Tanner said many options are being discussed as far as game location, including other cities; potentially Baton Rouge.
Classes at the University of South Carolina were cancelled for the entire week. There’s constant dialogue. The availability of first responders now being used in flood relief, the condition of area roadways, and the availability of potable water at the stadium were all issues USC was weighing as it considered whether to play at home Saturday or move the game.
“Our hearts go out to the South Carolina community as they recover from the devastating floods”, said Stephanie Druley, ESPN Senior Vice President, college networks production.
South Carolina has been hit with heavy rain causing flooding over the last several days. Still others believe that moving the game (whether to Charlotte, Jacksonville or elsewhere) was the right decision, but holding it in Baton Rouge would equate to a mistake.
LSU won’t be traveling to Columbia, South Carolina, after all.
The Tennessean’s Adam Sparks reports there are no plans to move the South Carolina-Vanderbilt game.
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said his players, assistants and staffers also came through the flooding mostly unscathed.
In addition to losing a competitive advantage, dropping a home game will have significant financial ramifications for South Carolina. The Tigers moved their opener in 2005 against Arizona State from Baton Rouge to Tempe because of damage from Hurricane Katrina.
Unfortunately, the Gamecocks will not have their marching band present for what is officially a home game due to the last-minute nature of the relocation. “If so, we’ll go there and play and if not, we’ll make a decision on where it needs to be played”, Bonnette added.
Tanner says officials are monitoring the infrastructure needed to put on a game. The general public will be allowed to purchase tickets starting Thursday at 6 p.m.
All tickets will be emailed to purchasers as “Print at Home” tickets attached to the email in a PDF document. Tickets will need to be printed by the buyer, then scanned at the gates.
Situated right off campus, Chimes Street and Highland Road is a natural hot spot for game day fans before and after kick off. For two new kids on the block, Barcadia and Mahony’s, football season has proven to be a rewarding challenge.
