S. Dakota high school principal shot, wounded; students safe
School officials say a suspected shooter is in custody and students are reported safe.
Police are checking reports that shots were fired at South Dakota’s Harrisburg High School on Wednesday morning, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Todd Baldwin said.
‘You really never know what this student would have done if they hadn’t confronted him, ‘ said Jim Holbeck, superintendent of the Harrisburg School District.
Lowery said the students hadn’t participated in a lock down drill yet this year, but staff members were trained on the procedures before school started.
Details are still sketchy, but authorities say one shot was sacked that struck the school’s Principal in the arm. Parents were allowed to go to the middle school and pick up their children.
We’ve heard about the school shootings across the country, and they’re always heartbreaking.
And they came in droves – including agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and ATF, several sheriffs and police agencies and officers with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, according to Clemens.
Teachers and administrators need to know what to do in case something awful happens, and students need to be smart enough to tell someone.
Lien also said he didn’t want one student to define what Harrisburg or South Dakota was like.
Holbeck hopes other students learn something from this shooting.
According to Argus Leader’s reporting, Principal Kevin Lein can thank the school’s assistant principal for intervening. In attempt to return to normalcy, Lein was back at school Thursday.
Buhl’s father told The Associated Press on Wednesday that his ex-wife, with whom his son lives, called to tell him that he had been arrested following the shooting at school. The Harrisburg district has more schools in southern Sioux Falls.
Harrisburg, a city of about 4,000 people, is just south of Sioux Falls. They may now be considered heroes from this day forward, but Lein says he has known that even before what happened.
