Google Now Owns Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com Because Alphabet
So now Alphabet owns the 26-letter domain name. The company already owns the ABC.xyz domain, which Google revealed in August when it made the Alphabet announcement. There’s no word about how much was paid to acquire the domain, first created in the late-90s and never put to use.
So why did Google deem it necessary to secure ownership of such an unwieldy Web address?
That’s right, Google (or should we say Alphabet) has bought the URL presumably so it can protect the brand image.
Google officially became Alphabet last week when it created the new parent company Alphabet to enable it’s different business to go solo and be more efficient. However, not content with just one domain, Alphabet decided to cover all the bases and have a domain name with the entire alphabet. Re/code suggests it might’ve been a defensive purchase to keep other tech giants such as Apple and Facebook from owning it. I also checked the full alphabet in other extensions, and it looks like many of those are registered as well.
Here’s how Google explains it, via a spokesman: “We realized we missed a few letters in abc.xyz, so we’re just being thorough”. This means that Google Search, Youtube and Android will be a subsidiary of Alphabet as well as smaller units such as Google X and Nest.
