UAW rejects Fiat Chrysler’s labor contract
That is the design of our constitution and who we are.
“We will gather the issues together; notify FCA that further discussions are needed”.
The Fiat Chrysler agreement would have boosted hourly base wages over the contract term to $29.76 at the senior tier and as much as $25.35 for the second tier, according to the UAW.
A breakdown of voting for the union’s 40,000 production and skilled trades workers was not immediately available.
The union had given Ford notice that a walkout limited to the Claycomo plant could have begun at noon Sunday unless an agreement was reached.
USA auto sales surged in September to their strongest in more than a decade, with the Detroit Three clocking double-digit growth as cheap gasoline and ultra-low interest rates drove demand for sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks.
UAW members rejected a tentative agreement between with Fiat Chrysler by 65% after a ballot on Tuesday, the results of which were finalised on Thursday.
At Volkswagen, a comparatively small player in the U.S., sales edged up 0.6 percent, reflecting in part a mid-month halt to sales of diesel cars affected by the United States investigation into the German company’s emissions controls, the company said. But a few members objected because the raises don’t bring an end to a two-tier wage structure in which workers hired after 2007 are paid less than veteran employees.
“This initiative was the result of feedback from an internal town hall with (Jefferson North Assembly) team leaders that focused on quality”, Tinson said.
“Workers are not just feeling good because their company is doing well, there are more employment options out there”, he said.
Fiat Chrysler said it was disappointed the deal was rejected in a statement, adding that the company believed that it had achieved a hard balance between rewarding workers and keeping the automaker competitive.
During this period, the organizations that called themselves unions stayed away from all pretense of organized resistance and refused to carry out even the most basic functions with which they were traditionally linked to. They have three options: go back to the bargaining table, extend the contract and move on to General Motors or Ford, or strike.
Strikes typically are a last resort, but can be used tactically to satisfy expectations that union leaders put pressure on automakers.
But Keller expected the reductions to be temporary, and for the union to negotiate a return to equal pay for equal work. That helps the UAW limit strike benefits it would need to pay.
During the General Motors GM.N Global Business Conference on Thursday CEO Mary Barra said the company has had regular dialogue with the UAW.
Tinson said the policy at Jefferson North was developed before the contract and has the support of UAW Local 7, which represents workers at the Detroit plant. That plant produces the money-making Ford F-150.
“Thankfully, with this evening’s announcement, that action has been averted”, UAW Vice President Jimmy Settles said in a message to workers posted on Facebook. “You have the dealers out there having to face consumers about what’s going on, and not having any answers”.
