Woman punched by CHP officer detained on same LA freeway
A woman whose 2014 beating at the hands of a California Highway Patrol officer along the Santa Monica (10) Freeway sparked outrage and lawsuits was taken into custody today in the same area where last year’s encounter took place.
Pinnock, 52, has a history of mental health issues. Officers picked her up and took her to Los Angeles Medical Center for mental health evaluation.
Her lawyer, Caree Harper, who was criticized by a federal judge for taking a 42 percent share of the settlement, said Pinnock suffers from bipolar disorder and didn’t take her medication for months before the run-in with Andrew, who had been on the job for two years. “It is important that law enforcement, as well as our communities, continue to support and provide appropriate resources to those who have mental health challenges and needs”.
Upon arrival to the Los Angeles Medical Center, Pinnock was placed on a 72-hour psychiatric hold. The uniformed CHP officer can be seen punching Pinnock at least nine times as she was pinned to the ground. The clip, which was shot by shot by a passing motorist, instantly triggered a reaction after it was posted online.
As part of the $1.5-million settlement, Andrew agreed to resign his position as a CHP officer.
The suspect was stopped by officers after a PIT Maneuver near the 105 Freeway and the Imperial Highway.
Pinnock’s arrest comes as the Los Angeles district attorney’s office is still deciding whether to charge Daniel Andrew in the July 1, 2014 incident.
She was reportedly spotted around 2:30an walking on the shoulder of the busy I-10 highway. Andrew pulled Pinnock from oncoming traffic and she resisted by pushing him.
