Uber collecting bottled water for Flint schools
The filters will be available beginning today through a partnership between the Michigan Department of Health Human Services and the Genesee County Community Action Resource Department.
Inhabitants of Flint facing expanded lead levels in youngsters after an adjustment in the Michigan city’s water source are sans getting water channels from the state alongside gifts of filtered water, as nearby authorities step to guarantee safe drinking water. Michigan last week confirmed elevated blood lead levels in Flint children and pledged at least $1 million in funding.
The study showed the percentage of Flint infants and children with above average lead levels has almost doubled citywide since the switch to river water, and has almost tripled among children in “high risk” areas of lead exposure.
Organizers of the upcoming Flint River Fest are postponing the event amid problems with drinking water in the city.
About 5,500 filters have already been distributed through private donations. It rarely meets, but state officials say it will have a role in Flint’s water quality.
The city of about 100,000 residents started using the Flint River as its water source in 2014 after a state-appointed emergency manager ruled out a deal to keep buying water from Detroit, 66 miles (106 km) to the southeast.
