Singer Julio Iglesias calls Donald Trump ‘a clown’
So it’s only natural, given his recent focus – the album honors classic Mexican songwriters – that the topic of Donald Trump has been unavoidable.
Donald Trump and Julio Iglesias engaged in a war of words in the press Wednesday after the singer said he’d no longer perform in casinos owned by the billionaire presidential candidate.
‘I have sung many times in his casinos, but I won’t do it again, ‘ he told Barcelona-based daily newspaper La Vanguardia. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. He thinks he can fix the world by forgetting what immigrants have done for his country.
“He’s a clown”, Iglesias continued, adding, “and my apologies to the clowns”. Wayne Parry/AP Iglesias, who said he will no longer play at Trump casinos, joins several other starrs who have blasted the Republican candidate. Through a spokesperson, Trump responded, “Good, I don’t like his voice or his performances anymore, anyhow!”
Iglesias denied he was profiting from the situation to promote his current tour, or his album “Mexico”. “I’m maybe the biggest Latino artist in history”, he said.
Iglesias, who has sold roughly 300 million albums in a career than spans nearly five decades, is known for his romantic ballads. Latin stars including Colombian singer J Balvin and Puerto Rico actress Joselyn Sanchez withdrew from their participation in July’s Miss US beauty pageant which is owned by Trump through his Miss Universe business.
He has also called for the mass deportation of illegal immigrants.
Singer Ricky Martin wrote a scathing op-ed that ran on Univision in which he lashed out at Trump for repeatedly “harassing” Latinos.
He is viewed unfavourably by 82 percent of Hispanics, with just 15 percent viewing him favourably, according to a Washington Post/ABC News poll released last month.
