Wednesday celebrates kids who walk to school
“International Walk and Roll to School Day aims to be a catalyst for change, inspiring long-term healthy routines of walking, cycling or scooting to school and improving sidewalks and paths”, Haggerty said.
“International Walk to School Day is a big day at FedEx”, said Tabatha Stephens, manager of FedEx Global Charitable Giving.
More than 150 schools are expected to participate in this year’s program, well over the 124 Alameda County schools that were in the program last year.
Local officials and parents will help to lead them in a “walking school bus”.
The TPO and the world has watched the event grow from one school in 1997 to over 40 countries and 4,000 USA schools participating in the 2015 global Walk to School Day.
Each Brevard school recognizes this event differently.
Teachers and school administrators will be walking along the routes on Wednesday morning, as well as outside schools to greet students as they arrive.
Second, worldwide Walk to School Day makes people aware of the need for safer walking and biking facilities in their communities.
Roosevelt Elementary: Cocoa Beach Mayor Dave Netterstrom, Commissioners Tim Tumulty, Mike Miller and Ben Malek will have to walk pretty fast to keep up with the special guest at this school.
Turtle Bay normally has 50 of its 840 students walk to school on a regular basis.
The Sauk Prairie Middle School and community will support global Walk to School Day, to raise awareness about pedestrian safety, on October. 7.
