Netanyahu says Israel won’t allow Iran to join ‘nuclear weapons club’
Before Iran’s top clerical body, the assembly of experts, he spoke about Israel, home to over six million Jews.
At the same time, Netanyahu appeared resigned to the world powers’ apparent embrace of Iran and their acceptance of the nuclear deal. “Iran will go on the prowl, devouring more and more prey”.
Netanyahu said the deal would encourage Iran’s bad behavior in fueling conflicts from Syria to Yemen, colorfully comparing Iran to a “rapacious tiger” and saying that more funds would not turn the country into a “kitten”.
In the speech, Abbas threatened to drop a “bombshell” resulting to speculation that he would sever ties with Israel over its settlement expansion and other hard-line policies.
Netanyahu called on Abbas to accept his offer and engage in direct negotiations with Israel, without pre-conditions.
Abbas said Palestinian patience “has come to an end” and described the current situation as “unsustainable”. “Believe me, it would be far easier to keep silent”, Netanyahu said.
“The Israeli government has said it is willing to sit down with Abbas without preconditions”.
The repeated requests by Reid and Obama’s unwillingness to make a statement on the issue – confirmed by White House officials and Senate aides – highlights how wide the gulf between the Obama administration and Israeli government has become. Netanyahu’s party won an unexpectedly large share of the vote in national elections earlier this year.
For his prop this year-the Israeli leader’s bomb diagram from 2012 is well-known-Netanyahu chose to use a copy of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s recently published book that calls for Israel’s destruction.
The UN-proposed solution envisages the creation of an independent Palestinian state within pre-1967 borders, alongside Israel.
Netanyahu also chastised the United Nations for what he characterized as excessive hostility toward Israel. “Utter silence. Deafening silence”, Newsmax reported.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stares down while holding his notes and pausing for 45 seconds as he addresses attendees during the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York on October 1, 2015.
“After three days of listening to world leaders praise the nuclear deal with Iran [I say]: ladies and gentlemen, check your enthusiasm at the door”, Netanyahu said.
