Apple sells record-shattering 13 million iPhones during 6s launch weekend
Last year, China wasn’t part of the initial countries for release.
Apple overnight announced that it had sold over 13 million iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus handsets in their first weekend of availability, breaking last year’s record of 10 million units.
The company’s chief executive Tim Cook said of the figures: “Sales for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first weekend sales results in Apple’s history”.
The new iPhone features the revolutionary Multi-Touch interface with 3D Touch and the Live Photos, which gives new life to still images. This suggested investors remained skeptical that Apple can improve on the demand for the previous iPhone, which propelled the company to its most profitable quarter ever, said IDC analyst John Jackson. The country overtook Europe to become Apple’s second biggest market earlier this year, with sales growing three times faster than in the Americas.
Apple has been reported to be well on its way to getting rid of the physical home button on its iPhone devices.
The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are nothing revolutionary as it is always the case with the s models of the iPhone.
Probably, this new record has been reached also thanks to the geography of the markets where Apple has released its new iPhones. And after three months, Apple has sold more that 70 million units iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. He estimates China added about 2 million in sales. So, by the end of 2015, over 130 countries will have access to the devices.
The new phones roll out in 40 more countries that day, including Mexico, Taiwan, Spain, Russia, and Italy.
Besides Apple retail stores, the phones are also available through AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and additional carriers, and select Apple Authorized Resellers including Best Buy, Target and Walmart.
Apple relies heavily on sales of the iPhone, which generated almost two-thirds of its revenue in the latest quarter.
