TJC to observe moment of silence Thursday for Oregon shooting victims
Tennessee’s Lieutenant Governor has encouraged Christian residents in the country to purchase a firearm after the recent shooting in Roseburg, Oregon that left nine dead.
A gunman, Christopher Harper-Mercer, 26, stormed into his writing class to shoot his professor, then began picking off cowering classmates one at a time as he questioned them about their religion, according to survivors’ accounts.
But an atmosphere of trepidation prevailed among a few of those venturing to school on Monday. Shootings where only a few people lose their lives are no longer worth covering (the University of South Carolina’s shooting earlier this year received little more than passing notice by national news organizations). Students and staff members shared the moment of silence in classrooms as well as community gathering spaces on the campuses.
A tribute area was set up in Swanson Amphitheatre, she said, and will be open all week. “But we are like a bunch of pencils – we are strong”.
“We’re not going to be deterred by what’s going on when you have an individual act like that”.
Woodcock was in another building about 4 buildings away on the 97-acre campus. We have to come together to change our laws if we are to remain a society with any human dignity at all. “People are saying they should tear (Snyder Hall) down”, Leverett said.
