Maryland says: ‘Randy Edsall is our football coach’ for Ohio State game
A New York Times report in 2008 indicated that before Syracuse hired Doug Marrone, it reached out to gauge Edsall’s interest in taking over after Greg Robinson.
If offensive coordinator Mike Locksley does not get fired along with Edsall after this weeks game, he is a candidate to serve as the interim head coach while a thorough search takes place.
In the face of mounting pressure concerning the job status of Randy Edsall, the Maryland athletic department said he remains the coach of the football program.
Edsall, 57, is 22-33 during his tenure with the Terrapins following a 2-3 start this season.
After two straight blowout defeats and amid a report that his firing is imminent, Maryland coach Randy Edsall reiterated comments he made earlier in the week ahead of Saturday’s matchup at No. 1 Ohio State. The close loss was by three points to Rutgers to end the 2014 regular season, a game in which the Terps blew a 25-point lead at home. Now, after he’s fired, Edsall will probably have to rebuild his reputation in a smaller environment like the MAC or the Sun Belt and that’s a big comedown. In the Terrapins’ Big Ten opener last week, they were shut out by Michigan, 28-0. According to InsideMDSports, Edsall has lost the support of players, making it easier for Maryland to make this decision. A year after the program enjoyed a 30 percent increase in season ticket sales, Maryland has suffered one of the five largest year-over-year attendance decreases among Power Five conference schools this season, according to an analysis conducted by CBSSports.com.
There has also been high-profile uncertainty at quarterback, with preseason position-battle victor Perry Hills replaced after the first two games.
“We’ll let you know on Saturday”, Edsall said. Despite Ohio State’s recent struggles, don’t expect one.
