The gunman who killed his English professor and eight others at an Oregon community college committed suicide after a shootout with police who were on the scene within five minutes and exchanged fire with him nearly immediately, authorities said.
“She said, ‘My son is dealing with a few mental issues, and the roaches are really irritating him, ‘ ” Julia Winstead, 55, said.
The official is familiar with the investigation but not authorized to speak publically and commented on condition of anonymity.
Authorities say they have the shooter’s manifesto but have not revealed its contents.

Mercer was enrolled in the class but officials have not disclosed a possible motive for the killings.
“Our thoughts, our hearts and our prayers go out to all of the families of those who died and were injured”, the statement said.
The shooting, the latest in a string of similar attacks in recent years at colleges and schools in the U.S., has revived a fierce debate on gun control.
