House conservatives oppose McCarthy, search for alternative
But they remain outnumbered and it’s unclear if they can rally behind an alternative.
North Dakota Congressman Kevin Cramer, who stands behind McCarthy in this next election, disagrees.
Senator Mike Lee spoke about Chaffetz, a Republican representing Utah’s Third Congressional District, and the run for House speaker. This is a national wave, it’s not something that was driven by Jason Chaffetz.
Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), the Chairman of the Select Committee, is also targeted by the complaint. But there was no indication they’d settled on a candidate.
The announcement came just hours before members of the Freedom Caucus said they intend to vote as a bloc during the upcoming election to replace current speaker of the house John Boehner, a move which seems set to throw the party even further into disarray.
“Most of us have recognized that what happens tomorrow is really not the fight”.
Wisconsin Republican Rep. Glenn Grothman told reporters he is disappointed that Freedom Caucus members may not support the nominee if it is not Webster and criticized Webster for not saying he would support the nominee on the floor if it turns out not to be him.
A group of around 40 of the most conservative House Republicans – enough to keep him from being elected speaker in a public vote – were largely still non-committal after a candidate forum on Tuesday.
“I wouldn’t predict there is one at this point if there was a vote right now this night”, said Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, .as he left the forum, which was held near the Capitol at Republican headquarters. Two years later, he was re-elected as the tea party movement helped the GOP regain the majority.
McCarthy for the past year has been seen as heir apparent to Boehner, who is stepping down at the end of October. They want budget and appropriations recommendations actually followed, not merely ignored late in the legislative game by leadership. A few conservatives who’ve clashed with leaders have been removed from coveted committee seats.
“The process will work”, Mulvaney said. We are interested in who has the best plan to empower members. And I think what’s interesting is that Chaffetz is in this because there is this critical problem.
Among the lawmakers mounting longshot challenges to McCarthy are Reps.
These were a couple of the takeaways from Wednesday’s installment of “Conversations with Conservatives”, a monthly luncheon sponsored by the Heritage Foundation (parent company of the House GOP caucus) and catered by Chick-Fil-A, the fast-food chain owned by religious conservatives.
Boehner angered numerous Freedom Caucus by frequently bringing legislation up at the last minute before a deadline, often with a “pre-baked” deal with Democrats to avoid a crisis or a shutdown. “There’s not one American who in the course of their lifetime wouldn’t rather have the opportunity to say words over again”, said Boehner of Ohio. “We support open, accountable and limited government, the Constitution and the rule of law, and policies that promote the liberty, safety and prosperity of all Americans”. “That instead of the speaker dictating what the agenda (is) and what the bill will contain and what the amendments are going to be, that we let members decide that and we let the committees decide that”.
The House Republicans will vote for a new speaker Thursday, in a closed-door session.
