Portugal vs Denmark in a Euro 2016 qualifying clash
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal will be playing at Euro 2016 after beating Denmark 1-0, and Albania could still make it after a tense but violence-free 2-0 defeat against Serbia.
Portugal and Northern Ireland booked their places at Euro 2016 on Thursday, while world champion Germany was made to wait after being upset 1-0 by Ireland in Dublin.
Germany hosts already eliminated Georgia in Leipzig on Sunday, when a draw would be enough.
“It’s nice to be able to go Poland knowing you have a chance to qualify”.
Scotland were leading Poland at Hampden Park, but Robert Lewandowski completed his brace with the last kick of the game for a 2-2 draw.
He netted the opener, but goals from Matt Ritchie and Steven Fletcher kept the hosts’ hopes alive.
Northern Ireland won the group with a 3-1 stroll past Greece, but that second-placed spot is still up for grabs.
Two goals from skipper Steven Davis and one from John Magennis sealed the victory and left coach Michael O’Neill’s men unbeaten after nine matches at the top of Group F. Their final game is against Finland in Helsinki on Sunday.
“How they coped with the players that weren’t playing – right through the team, outstanding”.
“It’s a privilege to be here as their manager, proud to stand here as their manager”.
Hungary came from behind to beat the Faroe Islands 2-1 in Budapest courtesy of two second-half goals from substitute Daniel Bode. Ronaldo’s apparent left leg injury is cause for a few concern when the Real Madrid forward landed awkwardly after contesting a header, but Portugal march on to their 6th straight global tournament with a game to spare, the first time they themselves have avoided the playoffs since Euro 2008 qualifying.
Despite the slow start to the half from both sides, it was the home side who broke the deadlock in the 66th minute, as Moutinho found space on the edge of the area, before curling an past Schmeichel.
A win here on thursday will move them above Denmark if Portugal can get the win over Denmark and a win for Albania would also guarantee themselves an automatic spot if Denmark lose.
