Pastor says shooting survivor got flash drive
Classes at Umpqua (UHMP’-kwah) Community College won’t resume until next week, but the campus reopened Monday to staff, faculty and students who wanted to pick up belongings they left behind when they fled the shooting last Thursday.
The 26-year-old Mercer lived with his mother, Laurel Margaret Harper, in an apartment a few miles from the college. “It has to change”, Mercer said, adding that he had “no idea” his son owned any guns.
“He told him, “please don’t do this, it’s my son’s birthday today”, Mintz’s cousin Ariana Earnhardt told CNN.
His daughter Lacey (18) was sitting in a classroom on Thursday morning when Chris Harper-Mercer (26) entered the room with a gun and told everyone to get down.
“Our thoughts, our hearts and our prayers go out to all of the families of those who died and were injured”, the statement said.
At Sunday services, many pastors planned to talk about the shootings. However, a law enforcement official said a manifesto of several pages had been recovered. Because no one really knew Mercer very well in life, not much can be said about the man with a certainty. A report in the Daily Beast claims that Mr. Mercer abandoned his son at birth-a factor that the father did not mention during his anti-gun rant on television.
Hanlin said investigators were examining how Mercer purchased his weapons and were looking at a few of his online postings.
Harper Mercer told Lacey, “You, get up”, but she was paralysed by fear, blocked by Treven’s body and covered in blood, Scroggins said.
She heard Mercer questioning her classmates one by one before he shot them, asking at least two, “What religion are you?”
“He told him “you’re going to be the lucky one” and gave him an envelope”, Cheyenne Fitzgerald’s mother told reporters.
The rural Umpqua Community College, located on almost 100 acres of pastureland along the North Umpqua River, has about 3,200 students of all ages in this southwestern Oregon community, where the struggling timber industry is no longer seen as a path to the future.
“When we talked about guns and hunting, he was real open about it”, Louie Flores, 32, a neighbor from California, told The New York Times.
The Associated Press didn’t speak with Harper about the online postings; a knock on her door went unanswered Tuesday, and her phone’s voicemail box was full. “And I’m a great believer you don’t buy guns, don’t buy guns, you don’t buy guns”.
A day after the massacre, the 16 students who comprise the 8th grade at Umpqua Valley Christian School in Roseburg chose to donate to survivors and victims’ families the proceeds of a fundraiser originally planned to pay for a class trip to Hawaii.
Meanwhile an emotional Alek Skarlatos returned to US TV’s Dancing With The Stars to honour his home town of Roseburg, calling the killings harder to comprehend than the attack he helped stop in France. Another rescuer lost his niece.
