‘Twilight’ author Stephenie Meyer publishes gender-swapped novel to celebrate
Gender-swapping your protagonists can be an interesting experiment (like, again, Adventure Time), but here, Meyer isn’t doing it for fun; she’s proving a point.
Meyer’s franchise spawned five blockbuster films that launched actors Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson to global stardom. The book would be called Midnight Sun and would tell the story from Edward Cullen’s perspective.
Meyer also explains her reasoning for this updated version, saying it’s a response to complaints that Bella is a “damsel in distress”.
Just don’t expect this to be the beginning of an entire gender-swapped Twilight franchise.
Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic Stephenie Meyer published a new “Twilight” novel to celebrate the book’s 10th anniversary. Bella will change as well, not having a chip on her shoulder all the time, says Meyer.
“Twilight” fans who declared themselves “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob” will have to rename their allegiance thanks to 400-plus pages of bonus content released today from “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer in honor of the hugely popular book’s 10th anniversary.
“It’s always bothered me a little bit because anyone surrounded by superheroes is going to be…in distress”, she said. For Twilight to return with the exact same story but different-gender leads feels desperate at best.

In the new tale titled “Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined”, Bella Swan is now a boy named Beau (short for Beaufort) and Edward Cullen is now Edythe.
Then Meyer had an idea: “I thought to myself, ‘Well, what if I put that theory to the test?” Get ready for the epic love story of Beau and Edythe.
The author said earlier this month in a statement that she was looking forward to the Twilight anniversary, but no one could have predicted what she had in store for fans. “It really is the same story”, she told GMA’s Amy Robach. “It doesn’t matter who’s the boy and who’s the girl, it still works out”.
