Michigan State senior Denzel Valentine and Maryland sophomore Melo Trimble were both named to USA Basketball’s 12-man roster on Sunday.
“Making the decision on the finalists was very hard”. The official 12-member roster that will represent the United States at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, is expected to be on or announced before July 12.
Three other Big Ten players – Illinois’ Malcolm Hill, Purdue’s Isaac Haas and Wisconsin’s Nigel Hayes – were among the 22 invited to participate in USA Basketball’s training camp, but they were not selected for the team.
The US team is scheduled to train July 13-16 in Chicago, Ill., at the Chicago Bulls practice facility.
Mark Few of Gonzaga University is the head coach of the team along with University of Colorado’s Tad Boyle and longtime National Basteball Association coach Mike Brown.
The Pan Am Games will take place July 21-25 in Toronto. In group play (Group B) the United States will play games against Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Brazil, with the top two teams in each group advancing into the semifinals. The semifinal winners will compete for the gold medal on July 25, and the semifinal losers will play for bronze.
Trimble will become the third player affiliated with Maryland basketball to play on the in the Pan American games, joining James Gist (2007) and Walt Tilliams (1991). Second, thanks to the coaching staff and USA Basketball committee for selecting me and giving me an opportunity to represent the country in a positive way.
