Historic South Carolina floods prompt boil water alert

Crews are constructing a rock dam a few hundred feet north of the breach, located near the city’s hydroelectric plant.

After ordering residents surrounding Beaver Dam to evacuate the Wildewood community, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department says the dam is now stable.

Columbia is also still under a boil water advisory, meaning all water must be boiled for a minute before cooking or drinking. Any ice made from water that was not boiled beforehand should also not be used.

For days, a stretch of more than 70 miles of I-95 was closed from I-20 to I-26. “Even though we lost everything and stuff got stolen, we can rebuild together and help each other and be each other’s backbones and carry each other through this time because we need each other”, he said.

The pungent stench of mildew greeted Asiah Lewis when she came home to her apartment, her footsteps making squishing sounds on the carpet as she picked through soggy clothes and a lifted a moldy shoe from the floor. They were hoisted and taken to Mt. Pleasant Regional Airport and are in good condition with no injuries.

“This should not be normal day-to-day routines yet”, Haley warned.

Officials said the men were out-of-state contractors who were assessing damaged railroad tracks.
