Search for crew of missing ship called off
Efforts will now shift to determining what went wrong on the fatal voyage.
Federal safety officials began an investigation on Tuesday into what maritime experts have called the worst cargo shipping disaster involving a U.S.-flagged vessel in more than 30 years.
“I know that the Coast Guard along with our brethren in the Navy and Air Force as well as the commercial tugboats that were out there helping us did all that they could…”, Foder said. “I hope the families can take a few small measure of peace from that”, Fedor says.
“The decision to end a search is painful, and is based on the art and science of search and rescue”, said Lt. Cmdr. But, it said the situation was “manageable”.
The coast guard will now abandon its attempts to locate the 28 American and 5 Polish members of the crew after six days of fruitless searching. While crew members have not been officially identified, media outlets have reported the names of 18, with a few from Jacksonville, Cape Coral and others part of a close-knit mariner community in Maine, including the ship’s captain, Michael Davidson.
The decision to suspend the search was first communicated to families during a meeting today at the Seafarers global Union on Jacksonville’s Southside.

President Barack Obama promised the “full support of the US government” as officials investigate the sinking of the cargo ship. “I feel somebody, somewhere, somehow, is surviving”.
The U.S. Coast Guard called off its almost weeklong search for the missing crew of the container ship at sundown Wednesday.

An intensive search over tens of thousands of square miles of ocean turned up one unidentified body in a survival suit as well as large amounts of debris, including a heavily damaged life boat – but no sign of survivors. Among the items found was a destroyed lifeboat, cargo, life jackets and styrofoam. Assuming the device can be located, the National Transportation Safety Board will work with the Coast Guard, Navy and other agencies to devise a way to bring it up, likely using a robotic, remote-controlled submersible capable of diving great depths. There are a lot of factors to consider.
The cargo ship El Faro was situated near the Bahamas when Hurricane Joaquin blew through the area. It is believed to have gone down in 15,000 feet of water after reporting its last known position Thursday.
“Twelve hours of recording from the bridge could tell you a lot”, said U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-1st District, who was briefed by Dinh-Zarr. It said it expects to be on scene for seven to 10 days and wants to discover not only why happened, but why it happened.
Our focus has been on supporting and caring for the family members, loved ones, and friends of those aboard the El Faro.
