Cabbies in court over Uber driver attacks
The charges came after rising frustrations among taxi drivers that the app-based auto service is operating illegally in Queensland.
In a video clip shared on Facebook, a man can be heard saying: “That’s the story if you drive a GrabCar or Uber taxi”, as a few cabbies proceed to threaten Uber and GrabCar drivers by stopping their vehicles.
Taxi drivers around KLCC are now arresting Uber and GrabCar drivers who pick up and drop off riders in their area.
Big Blue Taxi service chief Datuk Shamsubahrin Ismail claimed his drivers had caught seven ridesharing drivers in the past two days.
He added that the “operations”, which started two days ago, were being carried out by about 100 KLCC taxi drivers themselves.
Lawyers for both women involved in the lawsuit argue that Uber markets itself as a safe form of transportation for women who have been drinking, but they claim the company is putting women at risk.
They are then seen forcing the passenger to alight from the auto.
Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Scott Pearson said Bal, backed by up to five others, asked the driver “Are you f***ing Uber?” before punching him in the cheek.
“If you petition to allow them (Uber), you are petitioning…not (for) Uber, but you are asking for private cars to be used as taxis”.
