18 year old man charged with the murder of PC Dave Phillips
An 18-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a police officer who died after being struck by a vehicle.
Jen Phillips, the wife of Pc David Phillips, hugs Merseyside Police chief constable Sir Jon Murphy at the scene where the officer was mown down and killed by a stolen auto early on Monday.
Clayton Ronald Williams, 18, of Wheatland Lane, Wallasey, is charged with the murder of PC Dave Phillips, attempted section 18 wounding against PC Birkett; burglary and aggravated unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle.
Oxton, another guy, Phillip Stuart, 30, of Mayfair Court, aggravated unauthorized taking an automobile and has been charged with burglary.
They will both appear at Wirral Magistrates Court today.
“You may not think that the information you have will mean that much, but for us that information could be the vital piece of the jigsaw we need and is essential in helping us to build up a picture in relation to what happened on the night”.
The pick-up then allegedly mounted a central reservation in an industrial part of Merseyside where two neighbourhood police officers were standing holding a “stop” device, aimed at slowing the vehicle.
The latest development come after officers arrested two men on suspicion of PC Phillips’ murder.
PC Phillips’ colleagues carried out CPR before he was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital, but he was pronounced dead a short while later.
Pc Phillips was married and he and his wife, Jen, had two girls, Abigail, aged seven, and three-year-old Sophie.
The family arrived in a fleet of eight cars and spent around half an hour at the scene where Pc Phillips was killed.
Abigail left a bouquet of roses and a message which read: “Daddy, I love you so much, you are the best daddy in the whole wide world, you are my hero!”
The pick-up was later found dumped in a cul-de-sac a quarter of a mile away in Corbyn Street, Wallasey.
His family released a touching video of his daughters playing with cousins at their home, talking about their hero “super daddy”, while his sisters and best friend spoke at an emotional press conference at Merseyside Police headquarters in Liverpool. I love you lots and lots.
In her tribute, Abi wrote: “I love you so much”. “Your little princess, Sophie”.
Mr Bett said his thoughts were with the officer’s family and that he could not imagine what they were going through.
Merseyside police federation spokesman Peter Singleton describing it as a desolate day for the force, adding the officer’s colleagues were devastated.
