‘Straight Outta Compton’ director will helm ‘Fast and Furious 8’
Straight Outta Compton made $200 million worldwide, so Universal Studios has a lot of faith in Grey to deliver once again with Furious 8. “Excited to bring u the next chapter of the #FastFamily saga”, Gray tweeted referring to “Furious 8” producers Vin Diesel and Neal Moritz and the film franchise’s distributor Universal Pictures. Behind them was a framed photo collage filled with stills from previous Fast & Furious movies.
Several days ago, Gray met with franchise star Vin Diesel regarding the open directing position. Know that he was also behind the 2003 remake The Italian Job (which wasn’t too far from the current Fast & Furious blueprint), Friday, The Negotiator, Law Abiding Citizen and so on.
Gray is coming off a big success for the studio with the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton, so this deal goes a long way in maintaining an already lucrative partnership between the two entities. This was my film school.
“People have a misconception that I started in music videos and woke up one day and chose to do movies”.
Furious 8 is slated for release on April 14, 2017.
However, Vin Diesel and Universal apparently had a different plan in mind. Variety reports that Gray will officially helm Furious 8, with pre-production beginning later this month and filming set for next year.
