IPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus: Apple Sets Record Sales Over Weekend
Apple said on Monday it sold 13mn of its new iPhones over the weekend, in a record-breaking launch for the newest models of its iconic smartphone.
The new figures surpass last year’s 10 million sales for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus sales within the same three-day period, a trend that chief executive Tim Cook chooses to refer to as “phenomenal”. Apple upgraded the processor to a custom A9 chip that supposedly runs circles around the competition, it improved the cameras and added a feature call Live Photos, 3D Touch (basically Force Touch) is part of the equation, and added a “Rose Gold” color option, to name a few of Apple’s selling points. Zach Straley, otherwise known as zeedude22 on Twitter, posted a video showing the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus submerged in bowls of water for a full hour.
“iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be available in India, Malaysia and Turkey on Friday, October 16 and in over 130 countries by the end of the year”, said Apple in a statement. This year’s results include sales in China which was included in the initial launch for the first time.
The company tested the new phones by applying 170 and 180 pounds of pressure to the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, respectively – a “dramatic improvement”. That’s 3 million more than past year and stands as testament that Apple has secured their position in the smartphone market once again.
Apple also informed that the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be available in more than 40 additional countries beginning October 9 including Italy, Mexico, Russia, Spain and Taiwan.
The bumper sales come despite suggestions that the new devices weren’t innovative enough, with Ovum dubbing the devices “just me too” when Apple first announced its new lineup.
The new iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus are made from aircraft-grade aluminum that will not bend like the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus did under certain amounts of pressure.
